Structuring Interaction in Open Collective Work: A Sensemaking Perspective on Ontologies
نویسندگان
چکیده
One core problem in open collective work environments is posed by ambiguity. In both organization science and information systems, approaches have been developed to mitigate this issue. Sensemaking research explains the problem with a rich vocabulary, but does not offer tools or solutions. Extant knowledge on ontologies offers such a tool, but implies a rigid and top-down view on the creation and interaction on these artifacts. In our research, we will establish how these two disparate approaches help to better understand how ambiguity in open collective work can be reduced. In particular the use for discourse mapping is estimated to influence open collective work.

Structuring Discourse for Collective Interpretation
This paper reflects on three examples of a discourse-oriented approach to supporting collective interpretation. By this, we mean activities involving two or more people who are trying to make sense of an issue. The common theme linking the examples is that each mediates interpretive activity via a software environment which structures discourse: participants construct their interpretation withi...
متن کاملDesigning Representational Coherence into an Infrastructure for Collective Sensemaking
We discuss issues arising from the design, implementation and first use of a prototype infrastructure for distributed collective practice (IDCP), and reflect upon their intersection with some of the themes emerging from the Paris 2000 IDCP workshop. The problem of maintaining coherence in a distributed system is of central interest to us. We focus on the notion of representational coherence, an...
متن کاملThe impact of individual, collective and structural Sensemaking on the usefulness of business intelligence data
The aim of this paper is to discuss how individual, collective and structural sensemaking influences the use of Business Intelligence in decision-making. Building on previous research we explore three patterns of sensemaking, individual, collective and structural. From this examine the impact these patterns have on Business Intelligence. Specifically we found that existing patterns of sensemaki...
متن کاملCollective sensemaking in virtual teams
Virtual teams (VT) have been studied since two decades because of their increasing presence in today’s organizations. To better understand how VTs work, our research tries to address this issue by analysing interpretive frameworks through which students made sense of a VT experience as part of a course taught simultaneously in two distant universities. Using the concepts of sensemaking (Weick, ...
متن کاملBiomedical ontologies: toward scientific debate.
OBJECTIVES Biomedical ontologies have been very successful in structuring knowledge for many different applications, receiving widespread praise for their utility and potential. Yet, the role of computational ontologies in scientific research, as opposed to knowledge management applications, has not been extensively discussed. We aim to stimulate further discussion on the advantages and challen...
